January 12, 2004
OPENING
PRAYER: Chris
Venditti
MEMBERS PRESENT: Jan
Agee, John Alvey, Doris Cadd, Mike Klamm, Chuck Koesterer, Ken Platt, Larry
Stanley, John Talbot, Chris Venditti, Father Ron Will, Youth Representatives
Diana Keck and Chris Oldenburg, and Ken Oyen
ABSENT: Ed Barlett, and Kim Lay,
The meeting was conducted
by Chairperson Mike Klamm. There were
two corrections to the December minutes.
Spelling of last names Chris Venditti and John Scheer were corrected. There were two additions to the Agenda:
Proposal from Jeff Hagins and Financial Report from last quarter by Ken Oyen.
AGENDA:
1)
Strategic Planning: 30, 60, 90 Plan
Mike Klamm presented his ideas of steps for future
planning in a 30, 60 90 day plan. He thinks we need outside help for future
planning. A financial analysis needs to
be done as the growth of the parish is going to be beyond our goals of getting
our debt paid. At this time it appears
we will not have the debt paid for at least seven years. To get started he suggested: In February
meet with the ministry heads to see what input they would have. In March meet with outsiders such as other
churches to get their ideas on strategic planning.
Other ideas generated were getting demographics of
population growth, promoting parish awareness that the number of priests will
be declining and our space is not going to be adequate, a survey beyond the
ministry heads, town hall meetings, articles in parish newsletter to educate
parish concerns. It was decided to
invite the ministry heads to a breakfast on Saturday, February 21 at 9 a.m. to
get their ideas of parish needs.
2) Changes
in Council By-Laws for discernment process/Pastoral Council membership
mechanics
Doris Cadd provided a handout to members showing
changes to the council By-Laws that were taken from the “Call to Leadership
Handbook” to change the council election process to discernment process. After review, it was voted to pass the
proposed By-Laws to a second reading at the next meeting. Doris said she will prepare an article for
the newsletter explaining the discernment process. She will also do an insert for the bulletin this week informing
parishioners that nominations will be the first weekend in February.
3)
a)William Jewell Dinner update
Doris informed the council that plans are underway
to have a baked potato and salad bar provided after 6 p.m. Mass Sunday,
January 25th for William Jewell students. Mary Ellen Hughes is assisting Doris with this event, and other
council members are welcome to join them.
b) Proposal from Jeff Hagins
Father Ron presented a proposal from parishioner
Jeff Hagins wanting to do an artist’s fair, talent show, and auction as a
fundraiser for the parish. He has
headed a committee for a fundraiser such as this in a previous parish. The funds from the event would be used
however the church deems necessary.
Council members asked for Jeff to put details in a written proposal
along with his expectations to be considered at the next meeting.
c) Financials from last quarter
Ken
Oyen presented a financial report for last quarter. He said we ran out of money in November and didn’t pay a principal payment on the
debt. The principal payment right now
is $11,000 a month. He said we are
having to use reserves to cover expenses by delaying maintenances. Budgeted expenditures are $154,000 per
month. School expenses are down some. Ken said he has been publishing awareness
of the parish debt weekly in the bulletin.
