St. James Parish Council Minutes
August 9, 1999

OPENING PRAYER:  Steve Gregoire

ABSENT:  Adam Benson, Erin Parrish, Anita Holt, Fr. Ron – Fr. Dien was present in Fr. Ron’s place.

Corrections to July minutes:  Cindy Rogers was in attendance – she has been left off the minutes.

Dick Brown made the motion to accept the July minutes, Tim Laird seconded.  August agenda was also approved.

OLD BUSINESS:

1)     Council reviewed the Parish Council goals, some suggestions, and possible revisions were made.  After much discussion, the council agreed it would be a good idea to take a better overall look at the goals, and to incorporate more parish concerns and/or items to make them more pertinent to our parish community.  Dick Brown, Steve Wolcott, and Tim Laird will work on the goals and report back to the council.  The question was also raised whether we should include longer term planning issues in new goals.

2)     Council members each submitted an idea for programs/presentations for our monthly meetings for the coming year.  It was decided for the next four meetings:

September:    New school principal

October:        Tyler Henderson

November:     Sandy Landuyt – RCIA

December:     Youth Presentation regarding trip to Nat’l Catholic Youth

Council in St. Louis in November

Other ideas were – discussion to make us better informed council members, and how to market council members, Knights of Columbus, facilitator to help us better understand different aspects of keeping a parish running smoothly, possible exchange with other parish councils on millennium studies, and more discussion on Thursday Adoration.

NEW BUSINESS:

1)  Sandy invited council members to attend a presentation by Tom Audley of Rockhurst College on September 1st.  The presentation is a preview of “Leave a Legacy” with a discussion afterwards on whether this is distributed information regarding the Missouri Catholic Conference annual assembly to be held September 4th in Jefferson City at the state capitol.  Sandy will probably be attending, and asked for two more volunteers to go.

2)  Exposition of Blessed Sacrament on first Thursdays – Cindy Rogers

Discussion was directed at possibly changing first Thursday Exposition of Blessed Sacrament to Monday.  She expressed some real concerns about noise and distraction when the Blessed Sacrament is in front of the tabernacle.  She asked the council’s opinion on either building a room where the patio is off the narthex or tearing out the wall between the reconciliation rooms to make a larger area for exposition.  Council members were against any building project, and general consensus was to leave in the walls, and try to get quiet time by possibly rescheduling cleaning day, etc.
