St. James Parish Council Minutes
September 10, 2001

 

OPENING PRAYER:  Chris Venditti

 

PRESENT: Ed Barlett, Doris Cadd, Lou Carey, Steve Gregoire, Anita Holt, Mike Klamm, Jerome Schieder, Annette Talbot, Chris Venditti, Father Ron, and Father Dien

 

ABSENT:   Roger Holyfield and David Porter

 

The meeting was opened by Steve Gregoire.  The August minutes and September agenda were approved.

 

AGENDA

 

2010 Project and Ministry Reports:

 

Youth –Jerome Schieder                                  

Jerome reported the youth garage sale was successful.  He also said there are 180 signed up for youth group, down from previous years, and asked the council for ideas on how to reach out for better participation. 

 

   Liturgy – Ed Barlett

Ed said he is enthused about the number of young parishioners serving as lectors, etc.   Special youth Masses are held on certain Wednesday’s at 7 p.m.  There are also Masses twice a month at William Jewel at 9 p.m.

 

Communication – Doris Cadd

Doris reported she had been working with Howard Henry on updating the web site.  A link to the school website is in progress. She said Toni McLain is working with contacts at school for articles for the newsletter.

 

Christian Formation – Chris Venditti

No Report.  Chris said she will contact Dawn Claxton about attending the November council meeting to discuss maintenance of our parish.

 

School - Anita Holt

Anita reported registration for this school year is at 300.  The 7th grade is full with 24 students.  They are looking for ideas to increase enrollment for 2002.  The 6th grade class is starting a program on social justice.  They are encouraging students to participate in the liturgy and various ministries.  They are working with the police department on an evacuation plan, and are looking into installing a buzzer at the front door for added security.  Voice mail box #420 has been established for the school.  Anita also said the first of ten all school retreats was held recently on Human Dignity.  Other basic building blocks they will be working on this year are respect of human life, association, participation, preferential protection for the poor and vulnerable, solidarity, stewardship subsidiary, human equality and the common good. 

 

Human Concerns and Outreach – Annette Talbot

Annette said she attended a diocese Peace and Justice meeting August 17th.  The diocese wants a contact for this ministry to keep their parish informed on presentations and legislative issues.  She said she would ask for a volunteer to serve as this contact.

 

 

 

Religious Education– Steve Gregoire

Steve met with Fran regarding evangelization efforts and reviewing concerns and goals from the mission.  Speakers are scheduled for September 19th and October 6th.  They are looking into having adult bible study evening groups, and more parish activities to include the children of the parish.  Other ideas were given for welcoming new parishioners, reaching out to the alienated Catholics, and support for parents who receive no spousal support in passing on the faith.

 

Parish & Family Life -  Mike Klamm

Administration/Stewardship – Lou Carey

Diocesan Day for Pastoral Councils:

The Diocesan Day for Pastoral Councils workshop will be Saturday, October 6, 8:30 am to 2:30 pm in the Social Hall.  Council members reaffirmed the sessions they will be attending.

 

Renew 2000 Orientation:

Orientation for Renew 2000 will be held Wednesday, October 3, 7-9:30 pm at St. Therese’s.  Attending will be Chris, Ed, Mike, Annette, Anita, and Lou. Steve will attend the orientation at St. Mathew’s on October 2nd.

 

Review of  Today’s Parish articles:

Comments were given by members on several articles relating to volunteers.

 

Pastor’s Remarks:

w        Father Ron reported he will be giving a state of the parish report at all Masses this coming weekend.

w        Has a couple considering the Volunteer Coordinator position, and is hopeful they will have the time to fill this important role.

w        Suggested not having a regular council meeting in October due to the many other activities scheduled.

 

The meeting ended with a prayer by Father Dien.  The next council meeting will be Monday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m. with opening prayer by Lou Carey.  Dawn Claxton will be invited to give the November program.
