St. James Parish
Council Minutes
December 11, 2000
OPENING PRAYER: Father
Ron Will
PRESENT: Ralph Agee, William Bednar, Steve Gregoire,
Roger Holyfield, Tim Laird, Jerome Schieder, Brett Scott, Father Ron, and
Father Dien
ABSENT: Anita Holt, Kim Parente, David Porter,
Parker Stanley, and Annette Talbot,
The
meeting was called to order by Chairman Tim Laird. Steve Gregoire made a motion to approve the November minutes,
seconded by Ralph Agee. The December agenda was approved.
Henry
Parente was present to update the council on Project 2010. He asked the council if the draft is what
they expected when the project began, and told the members it was up to them to
carry out the strategies. He suggested
discussing a strategy at each council meeting to attain the vision or goals set
forth. He complemented the 2010 project
team on the great job they did putting the plan together. Tim Laird said the points of contact in the
plan will be completed, finalized, and voted on at the next meeting. Then it will be given out to the parish.
Father
Jim Urbanic from Chicago was present to talk about Evangelism. He said that, as a Catholic Church, we
preach the gospel pretty well to people we see, but not very well to ones we
don’t see. He said we have a church that
don’t evangelize very well because today about 50% or less of your parishes are
active. We don’t see the mission of
evangelism. He asked members to think
about what we can do to reach out to others as a council, and what do we have
to offer different age groups. He did
state it seemed to him that with our 2010 project it appeared we were on a
moving train on the road to evangelization with a lot of good ideas.
Discussion was held on the proposed by-laws regarding changes to
select members for a Pastoral Council.
David Porter drafted the proposed by-laws.
§
Jerome Scheider asked if we
had 11 “at-large” members would we still have a school board member on the
council. It was suggested we strike out
“at-large”.
§
Tim asked if we really
needed twice as many nominees as will be elected as stated in Article III,
Section 2 (c). It was suggested we
rewrite Section (c).
§
It was also suggested to
drop Section 1 (d) concerning members not succeeding themselves on the
council.
§
Section 2 (f) the council
felt should not strike collaborate with the Ministry of Worship.
§
Article IV, Sec. 7, strike
secretary from being part of the agenda committee.
§
Article VI, Sec. 4 (b),
Ralph suggested having names of candidates for offices written out on ballot
for elections.
§
Article VI, Sec. 5 (a)
Eliminate five strategies or completely omit.
The
Sunday 6:00 PM Mass continuation after a trial period of six months was
discussed. It was the consensus of
Father Ron and all council members that, as long as we have 200 people attending
and two priests, we should continue.
William Bednar made a motion to continue the 6:00 PM Sunday Mass,
seconded by Roger Holyfield. The motion
carried.
Father
Ron asked council members to look over the listing of young men and women of
our parish that may be interested in or exhibit the qualities for a religious
vocation, and mark the ones they believe should be invited to explore the
calling of God. The Vocations Committee
is beginning a program “Called by Name” to identify and encourage young men and
women for a religious vocation.
