Guiding the flock is a good description for the job of ushers. Everyone is well aware of the problems associated with fitting our growing parish into the 25 year old building; this makes ushering even more important than ever. Our main focus is assuring that everyone can find a place to be seated as comfortably as possible with as little disruption as possible. Ushers can be very useful for locating those remaining spots inside the church as well as locating bathrooms, telephones, lost mittens and additional seating in the Narthex when needed.
Our goal is to be almost invisible while also readily available if needed. We would hope that parishioners and visitors would look to the welcoming and smiling faces of the ushers and see the Spirit of God reflected there as we do our best to be helpful and courteous.
This ministry presents a unique opportunity to meet and greet more people and is a very fulfilling way to give back to God and our parish community.
Easter and Christmas are not events sponsored by the ushers but are definitely times when the ushers can use all available help; so, even if you’re not able or inclined to help on a regular basis, please use these times as an opportunity to help serve.
Parishioners can participate in ushering on a regular or part time or special event basis. Training can be accomplished in about 30 minutes time and name badges are provided by the Parish. It is an excellent way to give of yourself and also to meet more people. Many of the youth are able to contribute community service hours in this way.
The only skills necessary are attending as scheduled in a timely fashion and dressed appropriately. As stated earlier, training shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes.
We like to point out
that ushers are some of the first parishioners seen by visitors and also
some of the last as they leave us for the first time. What a great opportunity
to bear the witness of the Holy Spirit’s presence in our parish.
